WISDOM'S JOURNEY: Are you a "mere talker"? Proverbs 14:23
Are you a "mere talker"?
TODAY'S PROVERB: In all hard work there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23
There are two types of people: those who process verbally--by talking, and those who process internally--by thinking.
Even internal processors--if they're wise--need to talk things out from time to time. If they can find trusted advisers, talking their ideas out can eliminate mistakes and misdirection.
But the verbal processors can sometimes struggle with "mere talk."
It's a fine line this "talking it out" thing. Verbal processors need the space to discuss their ideas with others until it makes sense and they can proceed. The challenge is to not invest all our energies--and others around them---to talk an idea or concept out and never actually start or complete the project.
This is where a developed sense of discernment is so important. When those around us scatter whenever we say, "I have an idea." we might be a "mere talker."
There are more subtle signs. If after we've talked out all the possible scenarios and options we then find we're unable to move forward, then we may be merely talking. If there are no fruits to much of our efforts to talk it out, this may be another sign that we're merely excited about the possibility.
Which raises another point, sometimes we fall in love with the idea of talking about new ideas. We love the dreaming process. It's fun. It's interesting. As long as everyone around us is in on the fun, that's okay. But, if we're known for great ideas that are seldom realized, we may have a talking problem.
Our goal is to do what GOD has called us to do. Proverbs tells us to seek wise counsel, but as we can see by this verse, He also cautions against merely talking.
Whether we're verbal or internal processors, there is one person who needs to be part of our ideas or projects from the very beginning--our Heavenly Father. Talking about it with Him is great. But, listening for His feedback is the best.
May we wisely talk out our ideas, my friends.
