Do you live your instructions?



TODAY'S PROVERB: Listen to advice and accept instruction, so that in the end you may be wise.
Proverbs 19:20

Today's proverb may seem repetitive, simple--more like the proverbial fortune cookie message. We've probably read various iterations of this theme while reading through Proverbs. But, there's a really wise reason for that.

Did you know we only retain 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, and 30% of what they see?

When we use multiple modes of learning, those percentages increase: we retain 50% of what we see and hear, 70% of what we speak about, but 90% of what we speak about and do--or live.

The more ways we receive information, the better our chances of retaining and processing it. But the most effective way, clearly is to live it.

GOD is so good to help us with that. Lessons that are important to our Wisdom and Faith Journey He will repeat again and again--and again and again.

This is why I repeat again and again the importance of living Proverbs by reading them every day--as best we can.

Did you know there are 915 verses in Proverbs? If we meditated on one verse each day it would take a little over 2.5 years. That's just reading it once. If we only retain 10% of that, we'll need to keep reading for a long time to retain the wealth of wisdom available to us. Maybe, for a lifetime?

Studying the Proverbs like a one-time Bible study is good, but how many of us remember the coursework we did in college? In high school? Unless we use the information every day, probably not very much.

I love encouraging you all to read a chapter of Proverbs each day, but I also want to encourage you--and me--to get creative. Discuss the verse with a friend. Sing the verse. Draw the verse. Needlepoint the verse. Paint the verse. Walk the verse and speak it out loud. Dig deeply into what the Holy Spirit might be showing us.

These are all amazing things we can do when we live the word--live the Proverbs--every day. What are some creative ways you live Proverbs?

Are you being diverted? TODAY'S PROVERB: Do not turn to the right or to the left. Divert your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:27 I love flying at night. It's a vivid perspective of just how small we really are. Looking at the expanse of the sky with its stars is peaceful, stable. Are you a voice for God's covenant? TODAY'S PROVERB: ...to deliver you from a seducing woman—a wayward wife with seductive words, who forsakes the partner of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God. Proverbs 2:16-17 Infidelity. The last few generations tend to think infidelity was something they created. For certain they have developed it into an art form using film, music, literature, and now, social media. Throughout Scrip ture and history, women have played as much of a role in this sin as men. Honestly, as women, we should know better. These days, women tend to look at fornication and adultery as their rights -- their choice. We can justify and defend all we want, but the truth is that it all boils down to this: our choice is whether we sin or don't sin. Not a popular thing to say. WISDOM'S JOURNEY: Are you lame or reliable? Proverbs 25:19

Are you lame or reliable? TODAY'S PROVERB: Like a broken tooth or a lame foot is confidence in the unfaithful in time of trouble. Proverbs 25:19 I have a "trick" ankle. There appears to be no rhyme or reason when it decides to give out. I'll take a step and it's like the bones turn to rubber. A misstep on stairs or a ladder or while carrying something can be treacherous. If I knew what caused the weakness then I could avoid  placing demands on it. But, alas, I don't know, so I can never fully trust it. Today's proverb counsels us about "trick ankle" people. Do you have people like this in your life? For the most part, they are reliable, but at unpredictable -- and inevitably important moments -- they are not reliable. Even when we forgive them for these events, we're still unsure if we can depend on them. It leaves a small residue on our ability to trust them completely -- at least for a season.
