Is there a hole in your heart?
TODAY'S PROVERB: Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief. Proverb 14:13
I love my life. Being retired with my beloved, loving the time we can spend together. Our life is full with service to our congregation and exploring what GOD has for us in our golden years.
Nevertheless, there are challenges as we age--not just to our bodies and minds. The trials we face when those we love move on to heaven before us.
This proverb really struck home with me since my younger sister died. I carried her as a baby with me to friends' homes. I changed her diapers. I helped her to speak, walk, and run. As an adult we became friends. The special, frustrating, joyous type of friend that only sisters can be.
That's gone now. As I get used to her no longer being in my life, the jagged sorrow is cushioned with new memories of a good life, and a comforting Heavenly Father. Knowing she's with our Savior and other loved ones helps.
But, as this passage so beautifully says, even in the joy, I must live with the fact that I can't share it with her now. Or with my father, my grandmother, or my mother-in-love.
We lose people in our lives that make us sad. But, if I may be so bold as to say, there are people who leave holes in our lives. And, I think GOD is saying, that's okay. He'll be there to soothe the aches and grief until they recede.
We will still laugh, live in joy and wonder, but we may have those moments that end in the bittersweet. And that's okay.
May we rest in knowing He'll be there in the bittersweet, my friends.
