Do you know the state of your herd?



TODAY'S PROVERB: Better is little with the fear of ADONAI than great wealth with turmoil. Proverb 15:16

Today's proverb reminds me of the proverb: Know well the condition of your flocks, pay attention to your herds... (Proverb 27:23)

Some of us can handle great "herds," others little "herds." Part of that is the process of knowing the "condition" of our lives. Being tried and true stewards of the blessings we have takes a lot of effort.

I know a few wealthy people. They all have beautiful homes--several, in fact--boats, every expensive toy you can think of. Some of the wealthy people truly know the state of their flock and they manage it well. Others don't.

All those things, over time, can become chaos and confusion if we're not focused on the Giver. They camouflage what's truly important--the true value in their lives. The turmoil draws them away from the LORD.

I always wonder if they reduced the size of their herd, then life would be more manageable, happier.

Hubby and I have had great and little wealth. We can truthfully say having GOD direct us to our sweet spot, takes away the stress of striving for more, and helps us focus on the many blessings before us.

Our "herds" are not just things. They can also be time, people, our careers, socializing, etc. I think when our lives get too big, too overwhelming, it can bring turmoil.

Stress will always be in our lives. A little stress can actually be motivating--we work harder, better. But, too much stress over a long period of time can create turmoil. Turmoil creates chaos, confusion, and uncertainty. The only way out is by our Heavenly Father's hand, tugging us out of the vortex.

What is the condition of your herd? Ask the LORD. He'll show us what size is best for us. And, maybe even over time, as we steward better, give us more.

May we know the size and condition of our "herd," my friends.

WISDOM'S JOURNEY: Are you lame or reliable? Proverbs 25:19

Are you lame or reliable? TODAY'S PROVERB: Like a broken tooth or a lame foot is confidence in the unfaithful in time of trouble. Proverbs 25:19 I have a "trick" ankle. There appears to be no rhyme or reason when it decides to give out. I'll take a step and it's like the bones turn to rubber. A misstep on stairs or a ladder or while carrying something can be treacherous. If I knew what caused the weakness then I could avoid  placing demands on it. But, alas, I don't know, so I can never fully trust it. Today's proverb counsels us about "trick ankle" people. Do you have people like this in your life? For the most part, they are reliable, but at unpredictable -- and inevitably important moments -- they are not reliable. Even when we forgive them for these events, we're still unsure if we can depend on them. It leaves a small residue on our ability to trust them completely -- at least for a season.
