Who do we walk with?

Proverbs 13:20--Back in the BDP (Before Daily Proverbs) era, I was a fool drawn to other fools. It was strange actually. I could enter a room and either I would strike up a conversation with someone like me, or they would make a beeline toward me.

Can you imagine what a bevy of poor souls who struggled with making wise choices would look like? Wise people made a path for us so we wouldn't get too close. Who knew what catastrophe would occur around us. We were like the blind leading the blind. (Matthew 15:14)

All kidding aside, once I began wisdom's journey who I "yoked" (2 Corinthians 6:14) myself with began to change. I sought people who were smarter and wiser than me--people who would challenge me. Inspire me. Mentor me.

Yeshua used to speak about the "blind guides." (Matthew 15:14, Matthew 23:16, 24) People who are spiritually blind. They have little to no discernment or wisdom. He cautioned strongly to not follow their counsel.

Are there people in our lives that lead us us blindly? As we walk the wisdom path, over time our friendships can change. This doesn't mean we no longer socialize with these friends, but it may mean the relationship alters.

Sometimes, our friends like the new us and want to join us on the journey. Sometimes, unfortunately, others don't like how we've changed and try to get us to be the way we were. As difficult as it may be, if these friends continue to pressure us to leave the pursuit of GOD's wisdom behind, we may have to move on.

Like an addict in recovery needing to stay away from friends who use, we may have to pray about how much time we spend with friends who continue to make regular foolish decisions.

This may seem cruel. And sad. But, if you're like me, we can never go back.

May we walk with the wise, my friends.
