What does an apple pie have to do with wisdom?

Proverbs 16:23--How is teaching our lips to speak wisdom like making an apple pie?

A few years ago, this proverb finally sunk in. Just because I have an apple tree in my backyard, it doesn't mean it will bear fruit in other's lives.

Okay, without all the metaphors: Just because I am reading Proverbs daily, I won't automatically speak wisdom well to others.

It's that simple, but oh so challenging. I may know what is the right thing to say or do, but I still have to follow through and choose to speak and act out the wisdom in a way that persuades others that they should too.

So, that's where the apple pie analogy comes in.

The apple tree represents our reading the Proverbs daily (or regularly). The ground is fertile because GOD sees we are able to care and tend to this beautiful tree. When we offer a basket of fruit to someone, know that the recipient will have to either like to eat raw apples, or they know how to make their own apple pie. Otherwise, the apples could sit in the fridge until they spoil.

WHICH MEANS: not everyone can handle the raw truth. Either they are not quite mature enough, or there's a blindness they need guidance with.

Making the apple pie represents the time, expertise, and effort it takes to make a crust, choose the best apples, slice them, season, and sweeten it well.

WHICH MEANS: In most situations, to be able to counsel someone, we need to have lived out and experienced the truth for ourselves. We need to know how to pick the right passages and practical guidance that can be used.

Serving the apple pie also represents the time and effort to set the table, slice the pie, and giving the recipient the proper tools to dine on it's deliciousness.

WHICH MEANS: Discernment and timing are so important. Waiting for the right moment when the person is ready to hear is so critical to them being willing to even listen. Then, giving them the tools to be able to receive and digest the counsel is equally important. Sometimes, they might need to have more than one slice--maybe the whole pie.

So, that's our apple pie. The other thing to remember? The counselor can learn along with the counseled. Why not eat a slice with them.

May our speech be well seasoned and delicious, my friends.
