What wisdom can you share?
Proverbs 24:27--Today is Bob's and my 44th anniversary. I chose this proverb because I wish I would have fully respected advice like this back when we were getting married. Things like: Don't take on expenses we don't have the resources in place to support them.
A few days before hubby and I were ready to speak our vows and begin our new life, I had about $25 in my checking account and Bob didn't have much more.
He was fresh from Navy boot camp. We knew he had a job at least for 4 years, free healthcare, and a housing allowance. Who needed more than that? We were in love and didn't care about where the money would come from--we just knew GOD would take care of us.
GOD did take care of us, but goodness me, we had to live with the repercussions of our foolish choices for too many years. Choices that had we been living the wisdom journey, we could have avoided.
All you newlyweds and soon-to-be-marrieds, if you are traveling wisdom's journey--living Proverbs--well done! You're off to a good start.
If you're new to Proverbs, take heed. Unless your parents have regularly trained you up in GOD's wisdom, you would be wise to seek out the counsel of married couples who are living with understanding. That experience and knowledge can really help.
Those of us who have been around the block a few times, what would we have wanted someone to warn us or tell us about? What bit of wisdom was hard-won through the fires of trial that we would like to share with those just beginning their new lives?
As I think about it, we were so foolish it's a wonder we survived the first 5 years of marriage. But, GOD walked us through even our foolishness until it dawned on us we didn't have to live that way. Oh, the grace and mercy!
May we live a wise life, my friends.
