Do you stick to the highway?

Proverbs 16:17--Okay. For those who aren't aware, I am a storyteller. I write novels, as well as blogs and devotionals. So, my overactive imagination created a whole scenario with this one verse.

We've all probably seen those scary flicks where the unsuspecting victims make a wrong turn and get lost in the woods. At night. Where there's some evil creature just waiting to terrorize the occasional foolish folks who think they're somehow exempt from those stupid decisions.

I don't like watching those films--first because they're usually gory, but mostly, I get frustrated with their dumb mistakes. Had they avoided them, it would be a very short movie, and they would have arrived home safely.

So, what does that all have to do with this proverb?

Do we journey down life's highway safe and secure in the knowledge that we've avoided the foolish decisions that detour our journey? Or are we forced to take exits we don't want. Exits that lead us to danger?

For example: if our family doctor says, reduce our salt intake and we choose to ignore that, we may take the wrong exit on our health.

Or, GOD tells us to be careful what we watch--that we should make a covenant with our eyes (Job 31:1)--and we go ahead and watch and read and surf compromising images; we've just taken the wrong exit to our spiritual well being.

Or, we choose to not forgive someone because what they did was just too hurtful, we will take a detour that will torment our hearts (Matthew 18:34).

It's the old spiritual cause and effect. GOD says how we should behave to keep us on that safe highway, but we have the choice to take another exit.

I suppose the best thing is to get back on the highway as quickly as possible. How? Seek our Heavenly Father. Seek His word. Seek forgiveness. Seek counsel. Know that He's already in the dark forest shining His light on the path out (Psalm 119:105).

May we stick to the highway, my friends.
