Is your path straight?

Proverbs 2:15--We've covered most of chapter 2 this year. The verses we haven't covered lean a bit more toward, shall we say, the negative aspects of ignoring wisdom.

Still, these snippets of warnings can reveal some pretty interesting insights.

This verse speaks of crooked paths and devious ways. It reminded me of a saying that went something like: Strange how complicated we make things to avoid showing our intent.

Why would a path be crooked? Most likely because it is avoiding something--some type of obstacle.

In relationships, that obstacle could be a sign of deception.

Have you ever encountered someone who begins a conversation or argument, then over time, they circle around and end up in the opposite direction? What you thought they were saying ended being the opposite of what you thought--and you wonder why you were having the conversation or argument in the first place.

It happens a lot with double-minded people. Their defense of their position isn't nearly as important as besting us. In fact, as they encounter the obstacles we raise, their path changes in illogical ways. In most cases, they don't realize they're doing it. They're immature and have a difficult time admitting their wrong.

This is a behavior we can all be guilty of. We all make mistakes. If while we're trying to defend our opinion, or instruct someone we are found in error, don't make a crooked path. Admit to our mistake. Or step away until we can better evaluate. Just be sure to return and admit IF we were indeed wrong.

People who intentionally deceive will behave in a similar manner. Be wary of folks who lead you down a complicated, circuitous path with the intention of selling something or influencing you for or against someone.

If you feel things are getting complicated and you're not sure which direction to go--step away from the situation. Don't make a decision while this phenomenon is going on. No matter how convincing the person may be. Otherwise they will divert and deflect until we're exhausted and we may give in just to make it end. That could have disastrous results.

In the end, life throws us enough curves--we don't need to create our own.

May we follow a straight path, my friends.
