Is it really a bad deal?
Proverbs 6:1-5--"What was I thinking?" If you've ever felt that way after agreeing to something and later realizing the decision was a horrible one--GO TO THE LORD!
First, seek Him to confirm if the decision was a bad one. Not an inconvenient one, or a costly one, but one that will have long-term negative affects to you and/or your family.
Seek wise counsel--not just people who will tell you what you want to hear.
If after this you need to break the agreement, then as quickly as possible go to the party involved and beg out of the agreement/contract. The sooner you untangle yourself from a bad situation the better.
This passage seems counter-intuitive to everything that Proverbs, and the rest of Scriptures say. We are to honor our commitments to the point of cost. Let our "yes" be "yes" and our "no" be "no." (Matthew 5:37)
Yet, here is this passage. I suppose this is GOD's grace and mercy on us to mitigate getting out of a bad situation.
Still, it's important to note that freeing ourselves will have repercussions. The other party may not trust us afterward. Our reputation may be tainted with the experience. But, in counting the costs--which we will only learn through prayers and wise counsel--the overall outcome will be freedom.
I guess the real moral of all this is to not get into a position where we must exercise this option.
Yes, my friends, may we never have to.
Proverbs 6:1-5--My son, if you have become a cosigner for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge with a stranger, if you are trapped by your own words, ensnared by the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, and free yourself, since you fell into your neighbor’s hand: Go, humble yourself, plead with your neighbor! Allow no sleep to your eyes,n or slumber to your eyelids. Escape like a gazelle from the hunter’s hand, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
