Do you "do" justice?
Proverbs 21:15--How do we "do" justice?
Our world shows the signs of an unbalanced approach to justice. Children raised without parental supervision are now disenfranchised adults unhappy with how unfair they believe life is. And honestly, life is unfair in many circumstances. Their voices are loud and their stories heartbreaking.
But does that mean justice should be shelved? It's become a complicated debate with people much smarter than us. Meanwhile, those who should be punished, aren't. Those victims who should have justice, don't.
So, here we are in our homes, taking care of our families, fixing dinner, how do we do justice when everything seems so complicated? What can we do that makes any real difference?
Throughout the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), GOD is very clear about what is just and what isn't. He is very particular about perverting justice especially for or against the poor. He set up laws and regulations for living--and oddly enough--they are still relevant today.
To make a difference, we need to understand the standard--where the lines of good and evil are. What is righteous and what is wrong. That comes from GOD's word. It's the gold standard.
Justice begins at home. Our children should know that if they break a home rule or law, especially against a sibling, they will be punished. But, it's more than that. It's the best place to demonstrate how to do justice--how to show and live it.
We do justice when we:
- Take Turns.
- Tell the truth.
- Play by the rules.
- Think about how your actions will affect others.
- Listen to people with an open mind.
- Don't blame others for your mistakes.
- Don't take advantage of other people.
- Don't play favorites.
These may sound like playground rules--and they kind of are--but look again. These apply to us as adults, too. Now, apply GOD's laws and regulations and we have a great foundation to live justice.
When we as adults live a life of receiving and showing justice, we teach our children how to do the same as adults. Imagine the next generation living and demonstrating GOD's justice to a confused and battered world. How amazing that would be.
May we do justice, my friends.
