What do you crave?
Proverbs 23:1-3--There's a scene in the movie, Mockingjay, Part 2, when Katniss and her team are holed up in an abandoned, luxury apartment. They managed to find some food. Delicacies that were scientifically engineered to pleasure the taste buds.
Gayle--one of the young men from her district who had to scrounge for food his whole life--looked thoughtfully at these morsels and made a powerful statement. He said he had never understood the extravagant and self-indulgent nature of the people of the Capitol until now. He says, "Eating this food you can believe anything."
When our goals are only to gain wealth to seek pleasure, we deceive ourselves. We'll believe whatever our flesh will tell us.
Even hard work to produce wealth can be deceptive.
My opinion, my friends, I believe that in GOD's kingdom there are some folks who are called to carry the responsibility of wealth. Those with that anointing work hard to do it well--to be good stewards by giving back to the Body and to the community. They don't oppress others to gain their riches. They bless those who work for them.
They have nice things. But they strive to be good stewards of every penny they earn. They hold their wealth "lightly" because they know it belongs to GOD.
I've met people of this caliber. I've met others who are not.
At one time I wanted to "wear the mantle" of wealth. When I tell you it was a burden, it was like carrying a boulder on my back everyday. I felt myself turning into someone I didn't know or like.
It's nice to have expensive homes, cars, and clothing, but they can be deceptive. They can take us on a journey that is not where GOD wants us to go. And we want to go where He wants us to go, right?
Let us be satisfied with what He wants us to "eat." And crave His nourishment.
May our appetite be for the "food" GOD gives us, my friends.
Proverbs 23:1-3--When you sit down to dine with a ruler,
consider carefully what is set before you,
and put a knife to your throat
if you possess a large appetite.
Do not crave his delicacies,
for that food is deceptive.
