Do we prize our possessions? Should we?
Proverbs 12:27--What does prizing our possession mean in this verse? I thought we were to hold things "lightly" in our lives. To not seek after possessions.
We are to seek first the Kingdom of GOD (Matthew 6:33), but then those resources we need or want to live in this world will follow after His work.
So, in this context, "prizing" our possessions has to do with stewardship.
In today's world, even appliances are treated--and built--as disposable commodities. Our landfills and junkyards are overrun with discarded and broken cars, furniture, toys, appliances, things that not that long ago were cared for and passed on to the next generations.
I think about my grandparents. Others who lived through the Depression when money and jobs were scarce. When they scrimped and saved up enough to buy something, they did their due diligence to purchase quality products.
We do that today, right?
But then, that generation took care of those possessions. They dusted, cleaned, tuned, and maintained them diligently.
Those who were wise in their stewardship could pass on those treasures to their children's children.
I look around my home and wonder. What can I pass on to my children's children? Do I care for those items as though they belonged to the next generation? Or do I treat them as disposable?
Being good stewards is being responsible to also teach our children to respect those possessions given to them. We can lead by example and also find meaningful ways to help them prize what was bought with hard-earned dollars. To teach them that seeking GOD first is who we are as followers of Jesus. And that any blessing we receive above that should be treasured.
Something to thing about next time we stumble over a pile of things.
May we be good stewards of our possessions, my friends.
