DAY 78 IN THE 91-DAY NEW HABIT CHALLENGE! #ProverbsChallenge

Proverbs 19--I like receiving gifts, don't you? A little something given to me that had nothing to do with my birthday or anniversary or holiday. Just a thoughtful expression from someone I care about. And that gift doesn't have to be purchased, it can be a visit or phone call or an invite for tea. The gift of time is especially precious.

What happens when we "court" someone's generosity? Someone who has the resources to give generously? I suppose it's normal to want to have people in our lives that will give to us abundantly. But at what cost?

I've learned over the years that having a friend is first and foremost about being a friend.

A healthy friendship is where we actively give of ourselves--not to receive, because a good friend naturally reciprocates--but to be there emotionally, spiritually, and physically. To be present in their lives in meaningful ways.

When we seek the favor and friendship of someone generous, wealthy, popular, or famous for our own agendas we miss out on the beauty and blessing of cultivating a sweet friendship. The sacrifice and joy.

I have friends in "high places" and our friendships are honed in fire and steel. These dear souls need "safe" friends, a refuge from the demands people make on them. The reciprocity is different, and precious, but it's hard work. Hard work that is worth it. They challenge me to walk more purposely with the LORD.

What about the friends who aren't "high profile?" Those society has pigeon-holed as not as valued?

Who knows, there may be someone whom GOD wants to add to our life that we might not typically choose as a friend. There may be no outward "benefit" to the friendship, but He knows the blessing the friendship will be.

Treasure friendships. They are a gift from GOD. Surround yourself with people who will help you dig deeper with Him.

And if you're looking for a friend like that, begin by being a friend.

Be a friend, my friends.
