DAY 12 IN THE 91-DAY NEW HABIT CHALLENGE!#ProverbsChallenge
Proverbs 12--If one can have a favorite chapter in Proverbs, this is mine. It is meaty with lessons and guidance, yes, but what I love about it is how these verses give practical ways to walk those lessons out.
In other words, it pushes me from choosing wisdom into pursuing wisdom.
I can choose to be more knowledgeable by studying, but to truly pursue knowledge I must be willing to accept correction (vs. 1).
I can choose righteousness in the obvious venues--work, home, congregation, community--but what about the tender lives of my pets or livestock (vs. 10)?
Today's verse that jumped out at me deals with the pursuit of wisdom and her "sister," discipline.
Once I chose wisdom's journey I learned that I must pursue the discipline of my mind and body. Daydreaming without pursuing it with action is a thief of precious time. The pursuit of that dream is hard work.
Unwholesome and sinful thoughts will eventually spill out of our mouth in hurtful, confusing and sinful words. The pursuit of disciplining my mind is to take those vain imaginations and thoughts and submit them to Yeshua (2 Corinthians 10:5). Then replace those thoughts with His Word (Philippians 4:8).
When our minds and bodies pursue wisdom, we walk out our choices.
Will we make mistakes? Oh my, yes!
The other day I heard someone say that pain is the quickest way to learn a complicated and worthy lesson. I had never looked at it that way. One of my biggest fears is failure--failing others and failing GOD. Fear of the pain of failure.
The root of that fear is a lack of trust in the One who loves me, knows me, forgives me. That fear causes me to remain in fear and cover up the fear.
Once I realize my foolishness, I can be set free when I confront that fear with GOD. It's that very pain that will draw me closer to Him. And that is a worthy and satisfying pursuit.
May we pursue wisdom, my friends.
